Stories In Suspension: Wilderness Library
Tiny Library
Competition, Spring 2025
Crawford Lake
Rooted in the living history of Crawford Lake Conservation Area, this Tiny Library draws from the site’s natural and cultural layers. The lake’s rare meromictic condition preserves centuries of sediment, protecting vital ecological and Indigenous histories. Nearby, reconstructed Iroquoian longhouses convey a profound connection between land, culture, and learning. With the boardwalk undergoing renewal for AODA compliance, this project seizes the moment to introduce a new, accessible depth of public engagement.
The concept is built on the idea of layers. Spaces are arranged to reflect the stratified nature of the lake. The surface hosts vibrant public zones for gathering, dialogue, and connection with the landscape. The middle layer supports creation and exchange through workshops and flexible learning spaces. The deepest layer invites quiet reflection, housing reading nooks, oral histories, and material archives that honour the site’s past.
Natural materials reference the surrounding forest and traditional architecture, creating a design that belongs to its place. The library extends learning into nature, integrating with the boardwalk and evolving with community needs. It is a space where ecology, memory, and imagination meet, offering an inclusive and transformative experience for all who visit.
