Bird Observatory
ASC201, Winter 2025
Nature's Getaway In A Bustling City
High park is one of the most important urban escapes in Toronto for locals of the city and for the wildlife that inhabits it. One of the many important groups of animals that inhabit the park year round are birds. With Toronto being a pivotal point in the migration path for birds migrating to north and south of the city. The Trail is a bird observatory situated at the top of a ravine just off of Coloburne Lodge Road, overlooking the grand ravine and Grenadier Pond below. The Trail’ acknowledges the rich opportunities for bird sighting in the north east end of the site, and focuses on highlighting it.

The View
Positioned at the edge of a dramatic ravine, the Bird Observatory is oriented toward the most active bird habitats in High Park. Expansive sightlines open toward dense vegetation and the ravine canopy, offering consistent opportunities to observe local species such as hawks and chickadees in their natural environment.

Isolating The View
Conceived as an immersive retreat into nature, the observatory creates a sense of separation from the adjacent road. A linear architectural sequence guides visitors along a curated path through the building, evoking the experience of walking a forest trail. This procession gradually narrows and unfolds, directing focus outward toward the ravine and heightening awareness of the natural surroundings with flexible window arrangements.
